JOB PURPOSE
The Packaging Technologist is a pivotal role within the Deodorant Category, a key strategic growth area in Personal Care at Unilever. This position is responsible for supporting innovation and excellence in packaging for flagship brands including Rexona, Axe, and Dove.
The successful candidate will bring expertise in packaging technology and lead qualification processes to ensure flawless execution from concept to delivery. This includes creating superior product experiences that align with business objectives, while embedding sustainability and premiumisation at the core of all solutions.
Based within the Packaging and Aerosol Team, the Packaging Technologist for R&D works in partnership with internal and external partners. This includes supporting the Packaging Workstream Lead, providing Packaging subject matter input on Packaging projects on Innovation.
Understands technical risks, best practices, and core design requirements in their area of responsibility and is aware of all tools available to unlock efficiency and speed to market. Involved in defining requirements, risk assessment (such as Level 2 and Level 3/FMEA), components and product testing & validation using in-silico & physical tools and systems, co-coordinate trials and specification creation.
Works with Design team and Simulation Engineers, both internal and external, to support the process of validating and calibrating virtual models to ensure accuracy. Is responsible for data management, captures & exploits data (analysis/visualisation, capture and reporting). They may be responsible for developing new test methods if needed for new material or new application of existing materials. Uses data to help drive decisions within the technical team.
They will lead packaging and technology programs on behalf of the wider team to support continuous improvement.
Based within the Packaging and Aerosol team in the Deodorant Category Design Centre, Leeds UK.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides consultancy into core project teams to ensure product designs incorporate packaging design rules and best practice.
Provide packaging manufacturing expertise during design reviews and risk activities (e.g. FMEA, Risk Assessments).
Responsible for the development and validation of robust functional specifications for components and systems.
Help to define testing plans for innovation projects with input into network timings.
Analyse test results and use statistical tools to identify potential production issues, make decisions and recommendations to drive improvements within the packing innovation projects.
Manage lab technicians when conducting technical testing plans through to completion including pilot packaging equipment, factory line trials and Design of Experiments.
Work with suppliers globally to improve and/or harmonise aerosol component designs, developing and leading test programs to ensure implementation.
Contribute to the development of future capability initiatives by helping to identify and capture best practice and support the build of testing capability to validate “design rules” for implementation into future innovation projects.
Play an active role in contributing towards the Packaging and Aerosol teams' strategy activities.

Experience
Experience of packaging & manufacturing supply chain of deodorants, including aerosols
Competent in using measurement and testing equipment
Ability to read technical engineering drawings and understand tolerances
Experience in quality control, packaging materials (including resins, MB) and injection moulding preferred

Cyber criminals advertise fake job adverts with prestigious employers as a way of stealing information or even defrauding individuals out of money.In the most sophisticated cases, they will set up fake websites, which have a similar address to companies like Unilever. They even conduct fake telephone interviews and then offer candidates a role with the proviso they pay a fee for background checks or to cover work visa costs. These types of attacks are becoming more common as more people are looking for employment in the economic climate.
How is Unilever tackling this?
Many of Unilever’s recruitment sites publish a warning to candidates about recruitment fraud. The Cyber Security team also proactively scan for signs of people setting up fake Unilever sites and act to close them down.
